Defining Cubes in a Business Analytics Database

Once you have set up a Business Analytics database, you must define the cubes that you want to include in the database. You select the tables that you want to include, specify the data measures that you want to analyze and the dimensions you want to use to break down the data.

To Define Cubes in a Business Analytics Database:

  1. Open the BA Db. Overview window. Select the line with Cubes in the Description field, and then click Functions, New. Click Yes.

  2. In the Fact Table No. field, click the AssistButton. Select the primary fact table for the cube and then click OK.

Now you can modify the contents of the Name field.

  1. To include additional tables in the cube, click Cube, Related Tables, Select Fields. The window that appears displays fields in the fact table, and the tables that they are related to. Place a check mark in the Selected field on the line for each of the tables that you want to add to the cube, and then click OK.

You can add tables that are related to the "related tables" by again clicking Select Fields. Now the window includes tables related to any of the tables in the cube.

Press Esc to return to the BA Db. Cube Card.

  1. To specify which fields in the fact table and the related tables contain quantities or amounts that you want to analyze, click Cube, Measures, Select Fields. The window that appears lists all of the amount fields in all the tables in the cube. Place a check mark in the Selected field on the line for each of the fields that you want to analyze. Click OK.

You can change the names of the measures if you want. Press Esc to return to the BA Db. Cube Card.

  1. Now you must select the dimensions by which you want to analyze the measures. Click Cube, Dimensions, Select Fields. The window that appears lists all of the fields except decimal fields. Select as many as you want.

Click OK and then press Esc to return to the BA Db. Cube Card.

  1. You can also define functions to calculate amounts. In the Type field, select Balance at Date or Year to Date. Choose a measure in the Measure field and in the Time Dimension field, select from a list of date fields related to the measure.

  2. When you are finished defining the cube, you must update the .xml file which contains the cube definition. Open the BA Databases window and then click Functions, Update XML.
