1.4 Organizing Items in Your Catalog

The catalogs that display your items on the Web portal are created and maintained in Microsoft Commerce Server Catalog Management. For example, in the demonstration Web portal the items are classified by furniture type. They are grouped as chairs, desks, whiteboards, and so on. Chairs have been further divided into guest chairs and swivel chairs.

The only way to group items is with the Class field on the item card. If you have not already done so, you must assign each of your items to a class. Assign items to the smallest class to which they belong.

To see the classes in the demonstration company, open the Classes window:

Creating a New Class

You add a new class in the Classes window by clicking an empty line and filling in the fields. However, you must also remember to add an equivalent category on Microsoft Commerce Server to ensure synchronization.

Entering Class Codes on an Item

To enter a class code on each item card, follow this procedure:

  1. Open the Item Card window

  2. Browse to the first item that will be assigned to a class. In the Class field, enter the code for the class to which the item belongs.

In the demonstration company, item number 1900-S belongs to the G-CHAIR class:
