A role is a set of permissions for a set of objects in the database. You assign roles to users in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 with the Classic client. The names and default permissions for roles correspond to tasks, such as posting orders or fulfilling shipments, in your organization. You can use roles from the following sources:

Roles with default permissions are provided with the Classic client.

Supplemental roles, which include one role for each standard profile in the RoleTailored client and one BASIC role, are provided in an .xml file on the Microsoft Dynamics NAV installation media. To implement these roles, you import the .xml file into the Classic client. For more information, see How to: Import RoleTailored Roles. You can import permissions for these roles separately.
You can also create new roles with the Classic client.
