When you are using directed put-away and pick, you use the Whse. Item Journal to post, outside the context of the physical inventory, all positive and negative adjustments in item quantity that you know are real gains (for example, items previously posted as missing that show up unexpectedly) or real losses (for example, breakage of fragile items). Unlike posting adjustments in the inventory item journal, using the warehouse item journal gives you an additional level of adjustment that makes your quantity records even more precise at all times. You register any observed differences in bin quantity as they occur in the Whse. Item Journal. The warehouse thus always has a complete record of how many items are on hand and where they are stored, but each adjustment registration is not posted immediately to the item ledger. In the registering process, the program credits or debits the real bin with the quantity adjustment and makes a counterbalancing entry in the Adjustment Bin, a virtual bin with no real items. (You defined this bin during the warehouse setup process on the Bins tab of the location card.)
To ensure that the item ledger always contains the same number
of items as the warehouse, you regularly post the adjustments
registered in the Adjustment Bin to the item ledger. To do this,
open the Item Journal window and click Functions, Calculate Whse. Adjustment.

Open the Whse. Item
Journal window.
Fill in the header information.
Fill in the Item No. field on the line.
Enter the bin in which you are putting the extra items or where you have found items to be missing.
Fill in the quantity that you observe as a discrepancy in the Quantity field. If you have found extra items, enter a positive quantity. If items are missing, enter a negative quantity.
Click Functions, Registering, Register.
If you want to view or print a report of the
total adjustments per item that are registered at any time in the
adjustment bin. Open the Whse.

You find a few units of an item on a fork lift truck. You do not know where the units should be stored according to the program, but you can place them in a bin and register the quantity to this bin in the Whse. Item Journal. When you do this, the program registers a positive quantity to the bin in which you have placed the items and a negative quantity in the warehouse adjustment bin.
The items found on the truck have most likely been registered to another bin, and at some point, a warehouse employee will observe and register a negative difference in quantity for this bin. Perhaps the program has suggested a pick than cannot be fulfilled because items are missing from the bin, or a physical inventory has been performed for the item. When the negative adjustment quantity is registered in the Whse. Item Journal - or a value in the Qty. (Phys. Inventory) field has been registered in the Whse. Phys. Invt. Journal – a positive counterbalancing entry is made in the whse. adjustment bin.
Many entries for an item in the adjustment bin will thus cancel each other out. What is left in the adjustment bin, to be posted in the item journal, are the true losses or gains in inventory.
