When you are creating transactions in the program that take item-tracked items out of inventory, such as sales orders for instance, you can use reservations against inventory to ensure at the time of creating the document that the quantity of the item will be used only for your transaction.
You have two options for reserving an item that is tracked by either lot or serial number:
You can reserve quantities of specific lot or serial numbers.
You can reserve a quantity of an item without specifying lot or serial numbers. This is referred to as a non-specific reservation.
When you reserve a quantity with a specific lot or serial number, the program will not allow that quantity to be used for any other purpose.
When you place a non-specific reservation, the program reserves the quantity of the item without reserving the specific lot or serial number for the order.
Create the document line with the item number and quantity of the item-tracked item.
Specify item tracking in the item document line by clicking Line, Item Tracking Lines and filling in the lot or serial numbers and quantities that you would like to use.
From the document, click Functions, Reserve.
Answer Yes to the system message about reserving specific serial/lot numbers.
In the Item Tracking List window, select the lot or serial numbers to reserve.
Click OK to open a Reservation window showing only supply with the specified item tracking number. If there are any non-specific reservations on any of the item tracking numbers that you have specified for this line, the Reservation window contains a message at the bottom informing you of the quantity that has already been reserved.
Click Functions and either Auto Reserve or Reserve from Current Line to create the reservation on the specific item tracking numbers.
Create the document line with the item number and quantity of the item-tracked item.
Click Functions, Reserve.
In the Reservation window, click Functions and either Auto Reserve or Reserve from Current Line to automatically create a reservation. You can also click Lines, Available to Reserve and manually select item ledger entries from which to reserve.
